On the back of the card it reads:

     In an improbable climax to his courageous comeback from cancer, Dave was struck down twice by broken bones in his pitching arm.  It was almost more than any human could bear, but Dave, an intensely religious man with great inner strength, was not bowed down by his inexplicable misfortunes.

     It all started when Dave was told by doctors that he would never pitch again after a cancerous tumor was removed from his pitching arm.  But Dave persevered, he did not quit.  Ten months later, he took the mound at Candlestick Park.  The rest is the stuff of legends.  He won the game, broke his arm pitching the next game and broke it again in the Giants' pennant winning celebration.
